Australia calls for Davis Cup match transfer

australia_flagOfficials from Tennis Australia are calling for the transfer of its scheduled Davis Cup match against India from the latter’s city of Chennai to their end. The reason behind this request is for the security of their team.

“We have received advice from a variety of sources referring to traveling to India. It is on that basis of security concerns that we have asked for the tie to be moved out of India,” said Tennis Australia CEO Steve Wood in a statement.

“The ITF has received our request and is doing its own security assessment. The safety of our players and staff is of paramount importance to Tennis Australia,” he added.
The Davis Cup rubber is scheduled on May 8 to 10 and the winner will proceed to the playoffs for a chance to be part of the World Group.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has confirmed Tennis Australia’s request and will give their decision in the days to come. As of now, they have yet to discuss the alternate venue but for now, it’s still going to be held in Chennai as announced.

India’s tennis association officials have already sent their response to the ITF regarding the issue.
