Daniel Berta wins Mitsubishi tennis juniors tilt

Philippines tennis news

The Mitsubishi-Lancer International Juniors Championships held in Manila, Philippines concluded today with Swedish player Daniel Berta winning the boys singles event by beating fifth-seed Riki McLachlan of New Zealand (6-3, 6-4). The sixth-seeded player was playing impressively this past week, ousting top seed Liang-Chi Huang of Taipei in the quarterfinals.

Berta certainly has a lot to celebrate since he and partner Francis Casey Alcantara of the Philippines beat Riki and Ben McLachlan of New Zealand to clinch the doubles title with the score of (6-3, 6-0). Alcantara, a Grand Slam juniors doubles champion in this year’s Australian Open, became the first Filipino to have won a title (singles or doubles) in this 20-year old tournament.

It was an all-Russian affair in the girls singles matches, 7th seed Polina Leykina defeated 13th seed Ekaterina Nikitina (6-2, 6-4). In doubles, Ting-Fei Juan of Taipei and Min Liu of China defeated Thai-Indonesia tandem of Kanyapat Narattana and Beatrice Gumulya via a close tiebreaker(6-7, 6-2, 10-8).
