Sixteen countries from the top two groups of the Asia / Oceana Group took part in the first round of competitions of the Davis Cup.
Japan led in Group 1 after routing China with 2 singles match wins on Friday. The latter still has a chance to win the rubber if the team wins the doubles and reverse singles matches this weekend.
In Group 2, New Zealand led the pack when its players won the first two singles matches against Malaysia. In the first match, Jose Statham easily defeated Razlan Rawi (6-1, 6-1, 6-0) and Daniel King-Turner routed Yew-Ming Si (6-4, 6-1, 6-4). Just like the aforementioned, Malaysia needs to win the remaining three matches to advance to the next round.
Philippines’ Cecil Mamiit is on course to split the first two matches with Hong Kong after winning the first set against Hiu-Tung Yu (7-6). However, the match was postponed due to heavy rains. Hong Kong’s Martin Sayer won the first match against Treat Conrad Huey (PHI) in three sets (6-4, 7-6, 6-2). The Philippine team made it to Group 1 last year after two consecutive years of promotion. However, the team lost all of its matches last year thus stepping a notch down to Group 2.
