The much-awaited comeback of three-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova, of Russia, hit a snag on Thursday after she and doubles partner/compatriot Elena Vesnina lost their first round doubles match at the ongoing BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.

The duo lost to Russian Ekaterina Makarova and Belarussian Tatiana Poutchek  in match that led to a tiebreak (6-1, 4-6, 10-7).

Despite the loss, Sharapova remained optimistic about her chances in future tournaments, hinting that she might really make her singles comeback in Miami, where another high-tier tennis tournament will take place after Indian Wells.

Even though the doubles matches receive lesser attention, Sharapova’s presence boosted interest among fans, especially her newly designed dress from Nike.

The Russian former world number one is currently visible in Indian Wells, making the rounds, signing autographs and meeting new people despite having no more scheduled matches to play in Indian Wells.
