MaSha to skip Miami tourney

Maria SharapovaIt’s confirmed! Former world number one Russian Maria Sharapova won’t be competing in next week’s Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Miami.

This announcement was made this week, delaying once again the highly-anticipated comeback of one of the most popular tennis players.

Sharapova only took part in the doubles competition of the ongoing BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California. However, her comeback only lasted one match – she and doubles partner Elena Vesnina lost in the first round. Doubles competition has never been Sharapova’s cup of tea – she’s never competed in such event for the past four years.

The 24-year old has stated in her recent interviews that she’s already “way past” setting timeframes of her comeback and will focus more on rehabilitating her shoulder.

The Russian, a two-time finalist of the Miami event (2005 and 2006), will still be visible during the tournament to fulfill her duties for WTA. Just like what she’s doing right now in Indian Wells, Sharapova will be signing autographs, meeting up with sponsors and attending press conferences.

There’s no indication of the Russian will compete in the upcoming claycourt season.
