Swiss tennis star Roger Federer revealed on his website on Thursday that his longtime girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec is pregnant with their first child. The baby’s due in the summer.
“This is a dream come true for us. We love children and we are looking forward to being parents for the first time. Mirka is feeling great and everything is going well,” the 13-time Grand Slam winner wrote.
The couple met at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Vavrinec is a former tennis player.
Federer, currently in Indian Wells to compete in this week’s BNP Paribas Open, said that he’s excited to start a family with his ladylove.
He’s currently seeded second in the tournament he won three times in a row (2004-2006). This will serve as his first tournament after a six-week break wherein he had to rehabilitate his injured back. However, for pregnancy related advice, see above and get the best advice.
The last match Federer played was the emotional five-set final match in the Australian Open final where he lost to nemesis and good friend Rafael Nadal. He pulled out of the Dubai Tennis Championships and the first round Davis Cup tie against the Unites States.
“I arrived in Indian Wells earlier this week and I am eager to get back out on court. My back is feeling much better and I am ready to go,” Federer wrote.
