Having a Federer-less opponent pretty much guaranteed the win of the U.S. Team against Switzerland during the Davis Cup weekend series. However, the winning team – led by Andy Roddick – did not take chances and closed out the rubber at 4-1 after five tough matches and progressed to the quarterfinals for the umpteenth time.

Roddick closed out the team’s victory in the fourth tie after beating Swiss number 2 Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets thus giving the US a 3-1 lead. The fifth match between James Blake and Marco Chiudinelli was a dead rubber.

Roddick’s victory served as his 31st career Davis Cup win which places him on second place on the American list, just ten more matches behind John McEnroe, the team’s current captain.

Despite the absence of world number 2 Roger Federer in the Swiss side, the court was still filled by more than 15,000 fans. The U.S. team will face Croatia this July for a spot in the semifinals. The latter defeated Chile (5-0).
