Williams sisters won’t get penalized for skipping Indian Wells event – organizer

Despite the existence of mandatory participation among top players in this week’s BNP Paribas Open, one of the tourney organizers believes that Serena and Venus Williams won’t be penalized for skipping the event.

WTA spokesperson Andrew Walker said: “I have every reason to believe they will meet their obligations.”

The Williams sisters have made a joint decision not to play at the Indian Wells event since 2001. It can be remembered that Venus had to default her semifinal match against her younger sister due to injury. However, the crowd reacted differently and their reactions were perceived to have been racial.

The WTA tour has included the Indian Wells event as one of the five mandatory events this season. Players face a two-week tournament ban and zero ranking points within that period. However, a stipulation on the rules can be used to skirt penalty.

A player had to conduct promotional activities for the event within a 125-mile radius of the tournament location. It’s been reported that the Williams sisters will abide with this rule through charity work, media appearances or meeting with sponsors.

Walker said that they have yet to set dates for the promotional activities for the Williams sisters.
