2009 Laureus World Sports Awards nominees to be announced April 16

The nominees, location and date of this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards will be revealed tomorrow (April 16). The tenth edition of this internationally recognized sporting awards will be a tough one for the jurors considering that there were a lot of triumphs last year, most notably at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Only one player was confirmed as a nominee so far and he’s none other than World Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko for the Laureus World Comeback Award.

“I am delighted that we were able to ascertain in time that Vitali had received enough votes from the world’s media to guarantee that he would be nominated so that we could announce it at his fight,” said Laureus Vice-Chairman and tennis legend Boris Becker.

“This is the category that always impresses me the most,” he added.

Last year, three tennis pros received major awards. They were Roger Federer of Switzerland (2008 Sportsman of the Year), Justine Henin of Belgium (2008 Sportswoman of the Year) and Esther Vergeer of Netherlands (2008 Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability).
