Jim Courier sealed his eighth career Outback Champions Series title last weekend after successfully defending the Grand Cayman Legends Championships. The four-time Grand Slam champion defeated Jimmy Arias (6-4, 6-2).
For his win, Courier pocketed $60,000 plus 800 points that propelled him to the top of the rankings ahead Pete Sampras. Arias, who advanced to his first-ever Outback Champions Series final, received $40,000 plus 600 points to move in fourth place.
Meanwhile, Mark Philippoussis of Australia defeated compatriot Pat Cash to secure the third place. It was a match that ended with a tiebreak (6-1, 1-6, 10-8). Cash was a late replacement for Goran Ivanisevic, who pulled up of the tournament due to injury.
The Outback Champions Series feature retired tennis players 30 years and above. In order to qualify, the player has to meet certain requirements – such as reaching at least a Grand Slam final, being ranked in the world’s top 5 or have taken part in a winning Davis Cup team.
The next Outback Series event will take place this August in Newport, Rhode Island.
