A left knee injury could force world number ten Gael Monfils of France to miss the French Open next month. Being a semifinalist last year, Monfils could lose significant ranking points.
On Tuesday, in an interview with French sports daily L’Equipe, Monfils said that he already underwent an MRI scan and the results were not favorable. He’s scheduled to undergo another scan in a couple of weeks to determine if he could compete in the second Grand Slam event of the year.
“Frankly, it’s really hard to explain. It’s something pretty serious and there is a possibility that I will not play at Roland Garros. But I want to keep hope alive. For the moment I’m rested, the only thing I can do is to wait,” Monfils said in the interview.
Monfils also had the same problem two years ago which sideline him for three months. He’s already pulled out of this week’s Barcelona Open and may also miss prestigious claycourt events in Rome and Madrid in the coming weeks.
