Safina headlines Stuttgart event, Medina Garrigues in Morocco

Russian Dinara Safina starts her second week reign as world number one by taking part in this week’s Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany – a $700,000 Premier event which is now part of the European claycourt season.

Five of the world’s top ten are part of this week’s tournament, including defending champion Jelena Jankovic of Serbia. It’s going to be interesting to see how the top four seeds will fare in the first round since they’re all facing formidable opponents.

The winner of the singles event will receive $170,000 plus 470 ranking points while doubles event winners will get $34,000 and 470 ranking points.

In Morocco, world number 18 Anabel Medina Garrigues headlines the field at the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem, a $220,000 WTA International event also played on red clay. Last year, the 26-year old Spaniard lost to Gisela Dulko of Argentina in the finals. However the latter had opted not to defend the title and decided to compete in Stuttgart.

Garrigues will meet Camille Pin of France in the first round.

The singles event winner will get $37,000 plus 280 rankings points. The doubles event winners will receive $27,000 and 280 rankings points as well.
