Safina tops WTA World Rankings

Dinara Safina of Russia officially topped the women singles’ rankings this week after Serena Williams opted not to defend the recently concluded Family Circle Cup in Charleston thus losing significant rankings points.

Safina become the second Russian after Maria Sharapova to achieve this feat.

Despite not having won a Grand Slam title at this stage, Safina had made it to the final stage twice – in last year’s French Open and this year’s Australian Open. She also won four higher-tier titles in the past year thus propelling her ranking from 17 to number 1 this week.

Safina also became part of the first-ever brother-sister duo to have achieved the number one ranking. Her older brother, Marat Safin, achieved the feat in 2000. However, she’s quick to admit that she has yet to emulate her brother’s two Grand Slam title wins.
