Venus conqueror wins Family Circle Cup

Germany’s Sabine Lisicki proved that her victory over second-seed Venus Williams during the earlier rounds of the Family Circle Cup was no fluke when she made it all the way to the final round and to the title itself when she dispatched Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki in two sets (6-4, 7-6).

The world number 63 also broke the record as the lowest-ranked player to have won this claycourt event. The recent player to have held this record was former French Open champ Iva Majoli way back in 2002 when she was ranked 58.

The victory served as the 19-year old’s first ever WTA tour title and at this point, she has asserted herself as a force to reckon with during the claycourt season after she made impressive wins over higher-ranked players – including Wozniacki, who would have made a debut in the world’s top ten in the week’s rankings with the title win.

“I’ve worked so hard the last couple of weeks and months and it’s finally paying off. I knew I had the game to beat those players, and now I think I’m more mature to win the whole tournament,” the German said after the match.

Lisicki’s ranking this week soared from number 63 to 43. Wozniacki, on the other hand, moved up to number 11 and is just 50 points behind Nadia Petrova of Russia who’s currently no. 10.
