Vinci beats defending champ Kirilenko to win Barcelona Open

Italian player Roberta Vinci clinched her second career WTA tour title by winning the Barcelona Open title last weekend. The 61st-ranked player defeated defending champion Maria Kirilenko of Russia in two sets (6-0, 6-4).

Vinci came from a heartbreaking quarterfinals loss in Marbella last week wherein she pushed top-seed and eventual winner Jelena Jankovic to a third set tiebreak. However, that experience pushed her to perform better in this week’s event which saw early exits of the top two seeds.

Vinci’s victory this week propelled her ranking to number 52 while Kirilenko’s ranking dropped one notch from 37 to 38.

In the doubles event, top-seed Spaniards Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez defeated Sorana Cirstea and Andreja Klepac to win the duo’s third doubles title of the year.
