Belgium’s new tennis bet

Overshadowed with the fact that her compatriot Kim Clijsters is making a comeback later this year, Yanina Wickmayer proved that she’s doing just fine in assuming the post as Belgium‘s top women’s player by winning her first career WTA title at Estoril Open. Wickmayer defeated Russian fifth seed Ekaterina Makarova 7-5, 6-2.

Currently ranked 88th in the world, Wickmayer entered the tournament as an unseeded player. However, it did not became a factor as she beat higher-ranked players along the way, including third seed Sorana Cirstea and seventh seed Shahar Peer.

Despite the loss, Makarova asserted herself as a title contender after reaching two finals in two weeks. She reached her first career WTA final last week in Morocco where she lost to eventual winner Anabel Medina Garrigues.
