Boxing: Manny Pacquiao on Time’s top 100 list

I know this is not tennis related but I just found out that my compatriot, world-renowned boxer Manny Pacquiao officially made it to the list of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2009 published by Time Magazine on Thursday. This is definitely a major achievement especially for someone from our country considering that there were a lot of contenders in this elite list.

According to TIME, the people in the list are those “who most impact our world.”

The title of the Most Influential Person went to the founder of online community site 4chan.org named Christopher Poole. In terms of online votes, it was Pacquiao who was the runaway winner with 20,391,818 with Poole coming in second with more than 16.7 million. However, there was a certain criteria followed. Others named by Time include US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. World number one tennis player Rafael Nadal also made the cut (read related article above).

Manny Pacquiao is slated to meet junior welterweight champion Ricky Hatton this weekend in one of the most anticipated boxing matches of the year.
