ITF to decide on Australia’s Davis Cup fate on Friday

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is reportedly scheduled to make a decision onFriday whether to suspend the Australian team in next year’s Davis Cup. This is in relation with the latter’s forfeiture of its match against India which would have taken place last May 8-10 in Chennai.

Former Australian tennis player Todd Woodbridge is hopeful that the Davis Cup committee won’t push through with the ban considering his country’s clean tennis record.

In an interview with ABC News Australia, the former world number one doubles player said that ITF should consider the fact that the team made the decision for valid reasons. Australia cited security concerns in India as main reason for forfeiture.

Aside from the one year ban, Tennis Australia could be fined up to $100,000.

If the ban will be imposed on the team, Woodbridge has an optimistic answer.

If we get banned for a year or if we get put back a couple of groups in some ways, we are in a rebuilding phase and it gives up a great opportunity to take a young group of players and take them all the way to the top.”
