Madrid Open: Safina reaches third consecutive final

World number one Dinara Safina is through to her third consecutive final after a convincing semifinal win over claycourt specialist Patty Schnyder at the WTA Mutua MadrileƱa Madrid Open. The Russian beat the Swiss veteran in two sets 6-4, 6-2.

In the other semifinal, 18-year old Danish player Caroline Wozniacki reached her third final of the season after ousting two-time Grand Slam winner Amelie Mauresmo 7-6, 6-3.

The victory over the Frenchwoman assured Wozniacki’s debut in the world’s top ten in next week’s rankings, making her the first Danish player to achieve this feat.

The inaugural claycourt event has seen early exits of tournament favorites such as sisters Serena and Venus Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva.
