Nadal overtakes Federer with the most ATP Masters titles

World number one Rafael Nadal has just overtaken Roger Federer in terms of number of ATP Masters 1000 titles won – and the Spaniard is just 22 years old!

Nadal clinched his 15th ATP Masters title last weekend when he defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia in three sets. The Mallorcan is now just two titles away from tying Andre Agassi‘s record-setting 17 Masters title.

Here are the top five ATP Masters title holders since 1990 (as provided by the ATP website).

1. Andre Agassi – 17
2. Rafael Nadal – 15
3. Roger Federer – 14
4. Pete Sampras – 11
5. Thomas Muster – 8

There’s a big possibility that Nadal could earn his 16th ATP Masters title in next week’s Madrid Open. This tournament used to be played in indoor courts but now shifted to claycourt to serve as an important pre-Roland Garros event. The Spaniard currently enjoys a 30-match win streak on clay and has just won three claycourt titles in the past three weeks.
