Rafael Nadal confirms participation in 2009 Thailand Open

Thailand’s Lawn Tennis Association (LTAT) confirmed that world number one Rafael Nadal will make his debut at the PTT Thailand Open which will take place from September 26 to October 4 in the country’s capital city Bangkok.

In a press release, Nadal said: “I am very pleased to finally be able to come and compete at the PTT Thailand Open. I look forward to playing some great tennis for all the Thai fans.”

Defending champion Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga of France also confirmed his participation in the event. LTAT said that it will announce the complete 32-player draw in the coming months.

Last year, Tsonga avenged his Australian Open final loss to Novak Djokovic by beating the Serbian in two sets. Doubles event winners were Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy.

The total cash prize at stake is $608,500 with the singles champion pocketing nearly $100,000.
