Ranking Watch: Wozniacki makes top 10 debut

World number one Dinara Safina solidified her stay atop the WTA Tour rankings after winning the inaugural Madrid Open on Sunday. She increased the gap between her and number two Serena Williams by almost two thousand points.

Madrid runner-up Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark created history for her country by being the first Danish player to enter the world’s top 10. She accumulated 4370 points enough to bump Russian Nadia Petrova out of the world’s top 10.

Another historic achievement would be from Chinese player Jie Zheng who placed 15th in this week’s rankings. This is the highest ranking achieved by a Chinese tennis player (male or female). The previous record-holder for China was Na Li who went as high as 16.  She’s currently ranked 26th.

Other notable ranking changes include Amelie Mauresmo‘s return to the top 20. She’s now ranked 16th after reaching the Madrid Open semifinals. Another Madrid Open semifinalist, Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder, jumped three places to number 17.

In the men’s side, Novak Djokovic failed to regain the number three ranking from Andy Murray after losing in an epic semifinal match against eventual Madrid runner-up Rafael Nadal. Tournament winner Roger Federer stayed in number two.

Russian Nikolay Davydenko returned to the world’s top 10 after reaching Madrid third round. He pulled out of the tournament due to injury.
