Rome: Djokovic, Bryan brothers fail to defend titles

Rafael Nadal won his 30th consecutive claycourt match by beating defending champion Novak Djokovic 7-6, 6-2 in the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. In doubles, Serbian-Canadian duo Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor won their third straight ATP title by beating last year’s champion Mike and Bob Bryan, also in straight sets. It also served as the duo’s revenge after the Bryan brothers defeated them on the same stage last year.

This serves as Nadal’s fourth Rome Masters title in five appearances. His lone loss in this event came from the hands of former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second round last year. The title win means that Nadal’s ranking points are expected to increase next week.

Nadal’s victory earned him his third claycourt title in three weeks. He won his fifth Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open titles respectively. Interestingly, Nestor and Zimonjic also emulated the Spaniard’s feat – this time in the doubles events of the aforementioned tournaments.
