Serena needs to “protect knee” for French Open

Serena Williams lost her third consecutive match by pulling out of the first round match at the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open on Monday. The American, who lost the first set against Italian Francesca Schiavone before quitting, said that she had aggravated the injury to her right knee but stated that she’s definitely going to take part in the French Open later this month.

“It’s not going to stop me playing in Paris. I didn’t want to risk my chances to play Roland Garros. I don’t know how serious it is, but I don’t want it to get worse,” Williams was quoted as saying. She added that she intends to compete in both singles and doubles at the French capital.

Williams once against stirred public’s interest when she voiced out her disapproval on WTA’s ruling on injuries, famously stating that players get fined for not playing “even if they’re dead.”

The 10-time Grand Slam champion had early exits in her past three tournaments (Marbella, Rome, Madrid).
