Former Australian Open titlist Thomas Johansson retires

After more than 15 years of competitive tennis in the men’s tour, Swedish pro Thomas Johansson announced his retirement from the professional sport effective immediately.

The 34-year old athlete amassed nine singles titles including the 2002 Australian Open where he defeated Russian star Marat Safin in the title match. His career high ranking was no. 7 in 2002.

After a lot of thought, I’ve decided to end my professional tennis career with immediate effect,” he said on Friday.

Last Autumn, I underwent yet another operation for a foot injury and, one month ago, I became a father for the second time,” he added.

Despite the decline in his rankings through the years due to injury (he’s currently ranked 188th in the world), the Swede said that he’s pleased and satisfied with what he has achieved.

He added that he still loves tennis and would be willing to share his expertise for the Swedish Tennis Association in the future.
