Gerry Weber Open: Federer withdraws from Halle tourney

After a morale-boosting 14th Grand Slam win at the French Open last weekend, Swiss world number 2 Roger Federer withdrew his participation in this year’s Gerry Weber Open which is currently taking place this week. He reasoned that he’s too “exhausted” and “overwhelmed” after finally winning the elusive Slam.

The Halle tourney always served as Federer’s warm-up tournament leading to the third slam of the year – Wimbledon. He’s won the title five times and in four of those instances, he went on to win the grasscourt Slam.

“I sincerely apologize to the tournament organizers, my competitors, and my fans in Germany. I only hope they will understand that I still feel emotionally overwhelmed and exhausted by the incredible events of the past few days,” Federer wrote on his website on Tuesday.

“It is hard for me to admit, but I simply cannot imagine giving my best effort in another tournament right away and I don’t want to risk injury if I am not 100 percent prepared. I need to rest and recuperate,” he added
