Wimbledon 2009: Baghdatis, Monfils pull out due to injuries

Earlier this week, both Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus and Gael Monfils of France announced their withdrawal in this year’s Wimbledon citing knee and wrist injuries respectively.

Baghdatis, a former Wimbledon semifinalist, had been drawn to play against Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in the first round. The 95th ranked player has been replaced by Slovakia’s Karol Beck. The Cypriot pulled out of Ordina Open this week in Netherlands due to the aforementioned knee problem.

Meanwhile, Monfils pulled out of last week’s Queen’s Club tournament despite reaching the final 16. The 14th rank Frenchman, who reached the quarterfinals of this year’s Roland Garros, was supposed to play against Steve Darcis of Belgium in the said tournament but had to withdraw his participation.
