Wimbledon 2009: Centre Court roof might be put to use Friday (June 26)

It seems like today (Friday, June 26) may be the day that the much talked about Centre Court roof would be put to use to combat the rain.

Here’s the weather report for today as posted on the Wimbledon website:

Thundery rain across much of the south of the region will move slowly northwards, with sunny periods following later in the day to many parts. Maximum temperature 24 deg C (75 deg F).

The Centre Court roof has so far been used as a temporary shade for viewers at the audience area. For the past four days, the weather has been bright and sunny which was bad news for those who have been betting since Monday that it would be put to use.

On Thursday night, there was light rain reported in the area and the organizers decided to cover the Centre Court just for added protective measures, according to a spokesperson.

World number two Roger Federer is scheduled to play the opening match against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber at the Centre Court today.
