Roger Federer gets hometown honor

World number one Roger Federer has been recently named “Ehrespalebaerglemer“, a prestigious award bestowed to outstanding citizens of Basel, Switzerland. The 15-time Grand Slam champion hails from the said city.

Federer’s family, friends and fans gathered at a small ceremony last Thursday as the plaque was unveiled for the Swiss superstar’s honor. The plaque was placed alongside other awardees who have been hailed heroes in Basel.

“It’s a nice honor for me to receive the plaque and I will walk past it, I am sure, just a few more times. It’s going to be a proud moment, maybe also to show my kids in the future,” Federer said.

Federer reclaimed the top ranking after winning his 15th and record-breaking Grand Slam title in Wimbledon. He’s currently in his hometown with his wife, Mirka. The newlywed couple is waiting for the birth of their first child which might coincide with the Rogers Cup tournament next month. As of now, he’s still committed to participate in the ATP 1000 tourney.
