Top four seeds reach Bank of the West quarterfinals

The Williams sisters, Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic advanced to the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic, a $700,000 WTA Premier tournament, on Thursday.

It won’t be an easy road to the semifinals for the aforementioned players as formidable players await in the scheduled Friday matches.

Top seed Serena Williams beat Melinda Czink 6-3, 7-6 while her older sister Venus, the tournament second seed, progressed after ousting qualifier Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 7-5. The 2009 Wimbledon champion will face Australia’s Samantha Stosur for a place in the semifinals. Venus Williams on the other hand will face former world number one Maria Sharapova, who’s still making an impressive comeback from almost a year-long absence on tour.

Jankovic, seeded fourth, overcame a tough challenge from Germany’s Sabine Lisicki 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 and will face Marion Bartoli of France in the next round.
