Wimbledon 2009: Serena Williams prefers Grand Slam haul than top ranking

Despite the fact that she’s won three of the past four Grand Slam tournaments, Serena Williams will still be the world number two once the rankings are released on Monday. However, the American doesn’t mind being world’s second best on paper.

“I’d rather definitely be No. 2 and hold three Grand Slams in the past year than be No. 1 and not have any,” Williams said during the news conference following her victory at the Wimbledon 2009 singles final on Saturday.

Russian Dinara Safina remains the top-ranked player in the world after reaching the semifinals at this year’s grasscourt tournament. Safina lost this year’s Australian Open final against Williams and French Open final against compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova, recording 0-3 record in Slam finals.

“I think Dinara did a great job to get to No. 1. She won Rome and Madrid,” Williams said before the eye-rolling and laughing.

Williams won the US Open last year, this year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon. She reached the quarterfinals in last month’s French Open.
