Del Potro successfully defends Legg Mason title

Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro emerged victorious after more than 2 hours of high quality tennis against Andy Roddick of the USA to clinch the Legg Mason Classic title for the second straight year. The score: 3-6, 7-5, 7-6.

A challenged crosscourt forehand winner resulted in favor of del Potro which sealed the win in this closely-contested match.

“I actually thought it might have been out, and I asked him and he said it might have been out. So imagine the disappointment when it wasn’t,” Roddick said after the match.

Roddick, the top seed of this event, was a three-time Legg Mason titlist (2001, 2005 and 2007). This served as his first loss after four final appearances in Washington. It is also his first event since his runner-up finish at Wimbledon last month.

Despite the result, Roddick said that he’s optimistic about his chances of winning the US Open, which begins by the end of this month.
