US Open Series 2009 rankings: Andy Murray, Elena Dementieva grab top spots

Their impressive finishes for the past few weeks propelled Andy Murray of Great Britain and Elena Dementieva of Russia to clinch the top spots in men’s and women’s fields respectively after the fifth week of the US Open Series rankings.  With only the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament remaining, there’s a big possibility that these two players will emerge as winners after the sixth and final week. The winners will compete for the $1 million bonus prize money at next week’s US Open.

Here’s the current standings (As of August 23):

1. Andy Murray (GBR)                      145 pts.
2. Juan Martin del Potro (ARG)    140 pts.
3. Sam Querrey (USA)                      130 pts.
4. Roger Federer (SUI)                    125 pts.
5. Novak Djokovic (SRB)                    95 pts.

WTA:

1. Elena Dementieva (RUS)          170 pts.
2. Jelena Jankovic (SRB)              140 pts.
3. Flavia Pennetta (ITA)               115 pts.
4. Maria Sharapova (RUS)           110 pts.
