US Open Tennis 2009: Qualifying matches begin

The qualifying matches for this year’s US Open tennis has officially begun on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 with a total cash prize of $1 million at stake.

The matches are said to take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York and will run for four days.

There are 32 berths at stake at the singles draw (16 for women, 16 for men) and in order to reach that far, players will need to win three grueling matches.

A number of former top twenty players such as Guillermo Canas, Vince Spadeo and Nicole Vaidisova have taken part in the qualifying matches since their current rankings could not make a direct entry into the main draw.
