US Open 2009: Clijsters continues winning streak, beats Venus Williams

The Williams-Williams semifinal match will no longer become a reality in this year’s US Open after returning Belgian and former world number one Kim Clijsters prevailed against no. 3 Venus Williams in an unusual match that featured two bagel scores, one for each player. The final score: 6-0, 0-6, 6-4. Clijsters will progress to the quarterfinals and might soon meet the younger Williams in the semifinals.

“It’s still kind of hard to believe. But then again, I’m not trying to get carried away with it all,” Clijsters said after the fourth round victory over the 7-time Slam winner.

Serena Williams is the only top-five player left in the women’s singles draw after the 11-time Slam winner easily defeated Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-0. The first week was certainly interesting with top players get whacked off by lower-ranked opponents.

“I just want to keep this level and just stay focused,” Williams said when asked about her prospects of successfully defending the title.
