US Open 2009: Juan Martin Del Potro outlasts Roger Federer to clinch title

Roger Federer couldn’t stop the inevitable. After saving two match points in the final game of the fifth, the Swiss world number one faltered once more and eventually handed this year’s US Open men’s singles title to Argentine sixth seed Juan Martin Del Potro. Federer is the five-time defending champion of this hardcourt Slam tournament and was bidding for his sixteenth career Slam title.

Del Potro was simply at his element where it matters in this five-set thriller which lasted more than four hours. The final score 3-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

For his win, the Argentine won $1.6 million in prize money plus a $250,000 bonus for finishing third in the US Open Series. He also got a Lexus 2010 vehicle.
