US Open 2009: Kim Clijsters clinches title

The decision to give tennis another shot paid off for Belgian Kim Clijsters.

In only her third tournament since her comeback, the former world number one created history as the first unseeded woman to win the US Open singles title. She’s also the first mom to win a Slam title since Evonne Goolagong in 1980.

Clijsters defeated ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 7-5, 6-3.

“It was not really our plan. I just wanted to start these three tournaments and get back into the rhythm of playing tennis and get used to the surroundings again,” Clihsters said after the match.

The Belgian is currently on a winning streak here in New York. She missed the US Open for the past three years due to temporary retirement. She won the title in the 2005.
