US Open 2009: Roger Federer surpases $50 million prize money mark

Roger Federer became the first player in sports history to reach a total of $50 million in career prize money after he progressed to the second round of the US Open on Monday. The Swiss world number one comfortably defeated American bet Devin Britton in straight sets. By winning the match, Federer assured himself of the $31,000 prize money for the first-round win. Adding the said amount to his current prize money haul of $49,977,919 would guarantee this impressive feat.

Eighteen-year old Britton, this year’s NCAA men’s singles champion, clearly had no answer to the world’s top ranked player’s game but despite the loss, the University of Mississippi athlete is still happy with his performance.”

Meanwhile, Federer is bidding for his sixth consecutive US Open title. If he wins this competition, he would claim his 16th career Grand Slam singles title, the most among male tennis players.
