US Open 2009: Venus Williams sets up showdown with Kim Clijsters

This upcoming match has been anticipated ever since the draw came out late last week. It became a reality after world number three Venus Williams outlasted Slovakian player Magdalena Rybarikova 6-2, 7-5 during the third round of competitions in this year’s US Open. The two-time US Open winner will face another former champion, Kim Clijsters of Belgium in the fourth round.

Williams is still struggling with her movement due to the tendinitis on her left knee. The heavy strapping can be seen below and above her left knee but she managed to outperform Rybarikova, currently ranked 46th.

“I’m so excited. She’s been playing so great. She was a great champion and she’s still great,” said Williams, referring to Clijsters, who won the US Open in 2005.

“It’s great to have her back. It’s a boost for tennis and it will be a great match,” she added.
