Serena Williams‘ injury prevented the an all-top ten appearance in this week’s Toray Pan Pacific Open 2009. The 11-time Slam winner announced that she’s withdrawing from the $2 million event. However, her older sister Venus will participate, taking her place as the tournament second seed.
Defending champion Dinara Safina leads the strong field which includes past champions such as Elena Dementieva (2006), Maria Sharapova (2005) and Kimiko Date Krumm (1985). Krumm, at age 39, surprised the tennis world when she clinched the Korea Open title this weekend which makes her a force to reckon with at her home tournament.
The singles event winner will receive $350,000 while the doubles event winners will share the $100,000 paycheck.
