Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras to revive tennis rivalry via Venetian Macau Showdown 2009

The Venetian Macau Tennis Showdown 2009 promises high octane tennis action from multiple Grand Slam winners Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, who both signed up for this event to revive their rivalry on the courts.

The two American tennis icons will meet each other today (October 25, 2009) in Macau, Asia’s gambling capital. A specially made tennis court was created at the famous Venetian Macau Resort-Hotel for this occasion.

“It’s going to be competitive tennis—obviously not quite as cutthroat as it once was—but I still feel we can both play quite well,” Sampras was quoted as saying on Thursday.
“As much as it’s an exhibition, there’s still a lot of pride. Our egos are pretty big. Once the first point starts, I’m going to want to beat him,” he added.

Sampras previously held the long-time record with the most number of Grand Slam singles titles at 14 before it was overtaken by Roger Federer this year. Agassi had eight Grand Slam titles and one Olympic gold medal earned in 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

“I believe having two styles that are so opposite, having two personalities that are so opposite really lent for a great rivalry,” Agassi said.

Other players taking part in the Venetian Macau Showdown 2009 are India’s Yuki Bhambri and USA’s Ryan Harrison.
