Australian Open increases total payout to $21.4 million

The singles champions at the 2010 Australian Open will get $1.86 million each, a new record high for the season’s opening Grand Slam tournament.

The organizers of the Australian Open announced the payout increase early last week. The total prize money has jumped to $21.4 million, an increase of 4.1 percent compared to last year.

Since 2001, the Australian Open has given equal prize money for both male and female players.
