Jelena Jankovic grabs last Doha slot

Serbian former world number one Jelena Jankovic became the eighth player to qualify for the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships which will take place in Doha, Qatar next week.

The world’s top eight singles players and top four doubles teams for the 2009 WTA Tour season will compete for the prestigious title and the biggest chunk of the $4.55 million cash prize money. The competitions will be held at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex from October 27 to November 1, 2009.
Jankovic will be joining Dinara Safina, Elena Dementieva, Serena Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka and defending champion Venus Williams. Agnieszka Radwanska and last year’s runner-up Vera Zvonareva were named alternates and will also be traveling to Doha for the event.

“I am really happy about making it to the Sony Ericsson Championships for the third time in my career. It is always a nice feeling to end the season playing in the Championships as one of the best eight players in the world. I look forward to returning to Doha and playing some great matches,” Jankovic said in a statement.

After a sluggish start this season, Jankovic turned things around by winning two titles (Marbella and Cincinnati) and reaching the finals in Tokyo. She made it to the semifinals in last year’s WTA Championships.
