Two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova officially became the fifth player to qualify for the Sony Ericsson Championships, the season-ending singles and doubles tournament that will take place in Qatar later this month.
The Russian will join compatriots Dinara Dafina and Elena Dementieva as well as Danish player Caroline Wozniacki and 11-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams. Three more slots are available for the taking.
“In the last year I’ve worked really hard on my game and fitness and I am proud of the season I’ve had. I look forward to competing with the best tennis players in the world in Doha,” Kuznetsova said in a statement.
The tournament has a total cash prize of $4.55 million. The world’s top eight singles players and top four doubles teams for this season will compete in this prestigious event.
The Sony Ericsson Championships will take place at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex from October 27 to November 1, 2009.
