ATP World Tour Finals 2009: Nikolay Davydenko outlasts Roger Federer

Russian Nikolay Davydenko outlasted top-ranked Roger Federer in a three set thriller at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Saturday to reach the season-ending tournament final for the second straight year. It also marked the end of Davydenko’s 12-match losing streak against the Swiss star.

It seemed like Federer was headed for victory in the third set when he was just two points from the win when he led at 5-5 and 0-30 on Davydenko’s serve. However, the world number seven held on to his nerves to eventually break the Swiss star’s defense and record a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
“I think all my family, everybody who supports me, was waiting for this moment when I can beat Federer, because I have beaten everyone in the Top 10 except Federer,” Davydenko said after the match.

“I was thinking it was coming maybe in 2010 or ’11. But in 2009, at the end of the season, it’s a good feeling,” he added.

Davydenko finished runner up in this tournament last year, losing to Serbian player Novak Djokovic. This time, the Russian will face US Open 2009 champion Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina in the finals.
