Australia’s most popular sport is tennis – report

A survey conducted recently and was published on the latest Sweeney Sports Report revealed that tennis is the most popular sport in Australia.

According to the report, the interest level of the sport reached 58 percent to clinch the top spot. The cities that showed high interest in the sport are Sydney (65%), Melbourne (60%), Adelaide (56%), Brisbane (55%), Perth (48%), Hobart (47%) and Canberra (40%).

Sweeney has been doing the surveys for the past two decades and publishes the results twice a year (during summer and winter).

Tennis Australia‘s Director of Tennis Craig Tiley said that the results of the survey were encouraging. However, he said that there’s still a lot that they can do to improve the sport.
“Sweeney is one of several positive indicators showing substantial improvement in tennis interest and participation. Far from celebrating we are on the contrary continually assessing and fine tuning in partnership with the states, clubs, centres and coaches on further improvements to enable the easiest access to tennis,” he was quoted as saying.

This is a positive development ahead of the Australian Open 2010, the first Grand Slam event for next year.
