ASB Classic: Yanina Wickmayer wins title

The Belgians are unstoppable at the start of this season as Yanina Wickmayer clinched the ASB Classic title after defeating top seeded Flavia Pennetta 63 62 in the final.

In Brisbane, it is going to be a battle among Belgians Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters for the title.

The ASB Classic title serves as Wickmayer’s second career WTA Tour title. She did not drop a set during her five matches in this $220,000 tournament.

“She was just too good for me today. She deserved to win, she’s played unbelievable all week,” Pennetta said about her opponent.

Wickmayer was a late wildcard entrant in this tournament after a Belgian court lifted the supposed one-year ban imposed on the 20-year old.

In doubles, world number ones Liezel Huber of the United States and Cara Black of Zimbabwe clinched the title after defeating Laura Granville of the United States and Natalie Grandin of South Africa 76 62.
