Australian Open 2010 Quarterfinals: Venus Williams loses, Serena Williams wins

The Williams sisters had opposing fates at the women’s singles quarterfinals of this year’s Australian Open. Venus Williams failed to close out the match in the second set against China’s Li Na despite serving for the win to lose 26 76 75. Meanwhile, younger sister Serena made a major comeback to clinch the victory against Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 46 76 62.

Serena Williams, the defending champion, said that she already consoled herself that she’s still in the doubles competition after being down 0-4 in the second set.

“I’m surprised. I didn’t expect to win when I was down 0-4. I was like, ‘Oh well, at least I’m still in doubles,”’ the world’s top-ranked player said.

“I was actually thinking—it wasn’t a champion’s thought—if I lose today and I don’t win in doubles, I guess I can catch a flight on Friday,” she added.

Li’s victory over older sister Venus gave China two players in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

The lineup of the semifinal matches would be: Serena Williams vs Na Li; Justine Henin vs Jie Zheng.
