Qatar Open: Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer reach semifinals

A blockbuster final match between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at this week’s Qatar Open may become a reality as both players advanced to the semifinals.

Federer endured a tough three set match against Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 while Nadal won against Steve Darcis of Belgium. Darcis retired because of back problems.

“I know that Gulbis is the player with the most potential right now. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the ranking he deserves. I took him very seriously. I wasn’t surprised by how he played,” Federer said.

The world number one will next face third seed Nikolay Davydenko, who squeaked past big serving Ivo Karlovic of Russia 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7). Federer has the chance to avenge his defeat from Davydenko at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals. Davydenko went on to win the title.
Meanwhile, Nadal will face Viktor Troicki of Serbia in the other semifinal match.

“I am playing well. There was more confirmation that I am hitting the ball well. I started well and served good. I am in the semifinals without losing a set. I am happy with that,” the world number two said.
