UAE assures WTA of Peer’s visa for Dubai tourney

Israeli tennis player Shahar Peer can take part in next month’s Dubai Tennis Championships. This was revealed after the United Arab Emirates gave its assurance to the WTA in writing.

Peer was denied of a visa last year reportedly due to anti-Israel sentiments in the Gulf state after a three-week long war took place between Islamic militants and Israel in Gaza. It’s been reported that United Arab Emirates doesn’t have diplomatic relations with Israel.

The tournament was penalized with a $300,000 fine last year and was required to meet other conditions including making a written confirmation about Peer’s participation this year.

WTA Spokeswoman Katie Scott that they only received verbal assurances last year.

The Dubai Tennis Championships takes place on February 15.
